SARA's Core Mission: Empowering Survivors of Sexual Violence

At SARA, our foremost mission is to empower survivors of sexual violence. Through ongoing adaptive learning and continuous development, our dedicated staff is committed to aiding clients in their journey towards healing and recovery.

Our Commitment to Inclusivity

We take pride in offering free and confidential support services to all survivors, without discrimination based on factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and more. We stand by survivors, regardless of their background or identity.

Specialized Trauma Therapy

Our therapy team works alongside survivors to set healing goals and address the impacts of trauma. Utilizing diverse therapeutic modalities, we incorporate evidence-based approaches to treat trauma symptoms. One modality being Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), pioneered by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. EMDR has proven effective in addressing trauma, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties.

The Power of EMDR

EMDR, an evidence-based psychotherapy, stands as a powerful tool for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR engages the brain's natural healing processes. SARA is proud to offer these sessions free of charge, breaking down financial barriers to healing.

"[My therapist] is a fantastic therapist. She makes me feel heard and has been the first therapist that has given me the tools and guidance to make meaningful progress progressing my complex sexual assault trauma. Including but not limited to understanding triggers, creating boundaries, and coping after EMDR sessions."

The Science Behind EMDR

Just as our bodies naturally heal physical wounds, EMDR taps into the brain and body's innate healing design. Trauma can freeze emotions, memories, and sensations, impeding the healing process. EMDR clears these blockages through dual attention, using tapping or eye movements to access traumatic memories while staying grounded in the present. The process involves processing traumatic events, desensitizing stressors, and building skills for adaptive functioning.

Testimonials from Our Therapists

"I'm proud to provide EMDR, a transformative intervention for trauma."
" Many clients report that EMDR has been impactful and has helped them feel better in their everyday life.”

"EMDR's neurological approach releases pain, preserving the positive."
