Prevention Programs
SARA’s Prevention Team partners with leaders throughout our community to ensure that everyone in our community can be safe, connected, and supported. Our goals are to increase a sense of shared power and shared responsibility for well-being, to increase emotional literacy and belonging, and ensure access to accurate information about healthy relationships across the lifespan.
The Vision of the Prevention Program is to create sustainable cultural change that decreases risk factors and increases protective factors to prevent the perpetration of sexual violence at the community, relationship, and individual levels of the social-ecological model.
Below is an overview of the services we offer in the community and in schools.

RESTAURANTS
Our coalition of restaurant managers, bartenders, and owners is developing a procedure for handling sexual harassment in the workplace. SARA’s Prevention team provides consulting and training to help managers and staff intervene in risky situations.
FAITH & RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES
In our SafeChurch program, faith communities receive support, training, policy guidance, and other resources that empower congregations to prevent child abuse.
PARENTS & GUARDIANS
Peer learning groups create spaces for parents and guardians to learn in a safe, supportive environment. SARA staff facilitate conversations about how to be an ally to your child, what children need to know at each age, setting boundaries, emotions coaching, and preventing abuse. The SARA Parent Council brings parents together to guide prevention in our region, and provide peer support to other parents.
NEIGHBORHOODS
Neighborhood coalitions focus on making our community a safer place for everyone, by promoting mental health, well-being, and emotional literacy, while also removing barriers that prevent bystanders from intervening. We use hot-spot mapping to help adults and teens identify ways to improve community safety and make changes to help everyone feel like they belong and are taken care of.
SCHOOLS
EMPOWERING BYSTANDERS
The Green Dot bystander intervention program teaches high school students to intervene to prevent acts of abuse and violence. Green Dot has been proven to substantially decrease sexual violence as well as other violence and victimization. Green Dot shifts the norms in a high school so that acts of abuse are interrupted before harm is caused.
RESPONDING TO HARM
Administrators, counselors, and teachers need tools to respond when students harass or abuse other students. We use Shifting Boundaries tools to assess school climate and help administrators respond to students who harass. We provide psycho-education groups to help students improve behavior, using The Circle curriculum.
ATHLETES & LEADERS
We provide on-going high school clubs to train and support the next generation of change-makers. We also use Coaching Boys Into Men, a scenario-based learning tool to help athletic coaches dialogue with young men about intervening in situations of harassment and abuse.
SUPPORTING TEACHERS
Faculty and staff trainings include a wide variety of topics, including how to respond to sexual harassment, and how to prevent compassion fatigue.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL EDUCATION
The Momentum Curriculum is designed to be delivered in classrooms school-wide. We offer lessons that build on students' learning and development from 5th-11th grade. Students learn to identify and intervene to prevent sexual harassment and abuse, challenge objectification and stereotypes, promote empathy and respect boundaries.
